What a great question from thenappycakequeen on facebook
Question: ‘What are the following t'interweb thingies: widgets, RSS feeds and how do I get my website to appear on a search engine search?’
Well first it is FREE to add your site to google. The following URL will add your site to google. It takes about 12 hours or so for google to find your site. (http://www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl) However this will NOT automatically add you on the 1st page of a google search.
To get your site moved up the rankings of google is another question. This is called Search Engine Optimisation (SEO for short.) This is technique of enhancing a websites chance of being ranked in the top results, thus 1st page, of a search engine once a relevant search is undertaken. A number of factors are important when optimizing a web site, including the content and structure of the web site's copy and page layout, the HTML meta-tags and the submission process. LSEB Web can help with this, just contact us for details as it can be a long difficult process.
A Widget - is something which a person (user) can interact with to do something, sometimes through a click or by hovering the mouse over something. Often resulting in nice things happening! "Balloon help" can be classed as a widget. Another example of a widget is on ebay - when you hover over the magnifying glass on an item for sale, it shows a bigger picture - this is a widget!
RSS feeds - This is where you have an up to the minute "feed" of information. So for example on the BBC website news page - there is text which scrolls along the top with up to date news or breaking news - this is an RSS feed. With these feeds you can download them to your computer and have the information on your machine without having to visit the site. Some people see RSS feeds as blogs and regular updates which people may be interested.
Hope this helps and please feel free to “like” LSEB Web on facebook to ask any other questions!
